Our philosophy and message in regard to raising safety issues is that we welcome people raising issues- formally or informally. For our staff this is done ideally with their line manager or through the HSEQ department.

Offices:
Each office has a safety representative. If employees do not want to raise issues with their line manager or the HSEQ department they can raise them through the safety representative. Regular safety committee meetings are held where safety issues can be raised formally.

Projects:
There are a number of ways to raise safety issues- by any person working on our projects:
- e-learning induction (completed by all personnel on our projects before starting on our projects- the message is clear- we welcome people raising issues)
- Site specific induction (completed by all personnel the first day before going to work- message is re-enforced at a project specific level as to how to raise issues).
- Your Safety is My Safety Supervisor Induction
- Daily Whiteboard meetings
- Site Safety Representative- enshrined in legislation to represent workers in regard to health and safety. A member of the workforce.
- Joint Safety Committee Meetings- attended by the site safety representative and the safety representatives of any sub-contractor on site.
- Good catch cards
- Toolbox Talks (after each talk there is time allotted to raise any issues)
- Conversation Cards
- YSIMS workshops
- Day to day (informal conversations with supervisors and operatives)

A person can talk to his/her direct supervisor (if it is a relevant issue). Other possibilities are reports to the Department Safety Manager, the Department work council Person or to the Compliance Officer.

On Project level, safety issues are a topic on the (at least) weekly ReKo-Board meeting, in the monthly Work-Meeting on the projects, during the weekly ToolBox Talks and are part of the monthly project report.

Relevant dangerous situations, close calls or other reports are being summarized on a weekly basis and send to the Board of directors. During the monthly meeting with the board of directors and the department directors, each report is being discussed.

Additionally, each Department has its own additional meeting (ReKo, weekly Safety Talks,…).
Furthermore, safety is the central topic during the yearly employee talk (Mitarbeitergespräch).

If you suspect non-compliance with the Code, take the following steps:
1. Assess the situation: Use your common sense and your knowledge of standards and values at BAM to judge what doing the right thing should be in the particular situation.
2. Take action: If something is wrong, it is often best to do something about it on the spot. If you see something you have doubts about, try to discuss this immediately with the person involved if appropriate and follow the steps below.
3. Consult your manager.
4. Contact your compliance officer*: You can contact the compliance officer if you have a question, want advice. In case of (suspected) misconduct, you need to report it to your manager or compliance officer. In case of (suspected) misconduct your manager is obliged to inform the compliance officer.
5. Use the Speak up service: You should use the Speak up service if you feel previous reporting lines are not an option and the matter concerns a serious breach. As an employee you can (anonymously if preferred) contact the Speak up line via www.speakupfeedback.eu/web/bam.
6. Contact your confidential advisor*: If you have a concern and are unsure how best to report it, you can contact a confidential advisor for advice before you contact your line manager, compliance officer or the Speak up service.
You can find more information in our Speak Up procedure*. This procedure describes how your confidentiality will be respected and that any retaliation against employees who raise a concern may result in disciplinary action.
